• Wilbur blood pressure recheck

I took Wilbur back to the clinic in Burlington last Thursday for a blood pressure recheck. In the photo our internal medicine specialist, Dr. Tanya Donovan, is holding Wilbur while vet tech Katie applies the blood pressure cuff to his leg.

Do you think that tongue of his could possibly be any longer? Such a tiny mouth, such a long tongue!

The good news is that his pressure has started to come down once we changed the medications. He was at 160, down from the 200 or so we started at. But Tanya wants to see him at 140, so she increased the dosage and we will recheck in a couple of weeks.

At that time Wilbur will also have surgery for a growth above his left eye socket that has been rapidly increasing in size in the past few weeks. Tanya took some cells out of it on Thursday and sent it off to a lab for analysis; the results came back on Saturday showing it's a low-grade tumor with only a few mast cells in it. Given how fast it's growing, though, the prudent thing to do is remove it before it becomes a major problem.

I also had Widget along for her annual "geriatric" screening, and I'll provide her update next time.

  • Jake with Alayne 1

We were taking photos on Sunday for the spring print newsletter. I was framing the shot to see how it would look when I got that photo of blind Jake giving Alayne a kiss.

Here they are in the very next frame, post-smooch:

I'd like to give that face a kiss, too. (The woman, not the dog.)

  • Wilbur blood pressure 1

Back in early March I had a post on how we found out that Wilbur had high blood pressure, and the implications for his health and in particular, the retina in his remaining eye. Since then things have only become more of a mystery. I recently took him back to see our internal medicine specialist in Burlington, Dr. Tanya Donovan, for a recheck after he'd been on his blood pressure medication for two weeks. That's Tanya with Wilbur in the photo above, along with fourth-year vet student Jennifer S.

But "recheck" sounds too benign, because he had also started developing edema, where fluid was developing in his belly and then migrating down one rear leg. The only thing that had changed was Wilbur starting the blood pressure medication, which in itself isn't known to cause those kinds of complications.

Here's Wilbur during part of the physical with Tanya and Jennifer:

    Wilbur with blood pressure 2

And here he is during another ultrasound, where Tanya was looking to see if anyting had changed since his last scan that could explain the new signs we were seeing:

    Wilbur blood pressure 3

    In short:  Not really.

But the latest bloodwork that day showed his glucose levels were suddenly almost twice the high end of normal range. Was he now diabetic?

To confirm that finding, Tanya sent his bloodwork to an outside lab for a specialized test that can do a historical look-back at the previous 30 days of glucose levels in the blood. A couple of days later, on a Saturday, the results came back — and showed his glucose had been normal during that period. Odd indeed.

So that weekend Tanya asked me to take his glucose readings just to double-check the lab findings. We know how to do this because we have a glucometer from previous diabetes cases we've had in the past (Teddy and Sammy, among others). Wilbur's glucose level was perfectly normal!

His edema had also started resolving on his own, and by that weekend was completely gone. Tanya had already switched him to a completely different blood pressure medication, so we don't know if that was the issue or not. I'll be taking him back shortly for another recheck, and hopefully more answers then.

In the meantime, Wilbur is his usual happy, adorable self!

  • Maple sugar 1

Here in New England, it's maple sugaring season again — days above freezing (um, sometimes) and nights below freezing. Our friends at Jon Parks Tractor in Lancaster, who service our tractors and other equipment, also make maple syrup each spring. This year they asked if they could tap our sugar maples to add to their annual harvest, and of course we said yes. We'll also get some delicious maple syrup from the deal! Alayne and I took these photos this past weekend of some of the trees they've tapped here at the farm. (Click on photos for a larger image.)

In the view above, this is looking south with Mount Washington looming high and white in the background. Here's a close-up taken from the pasture beyond:

    Mount Washington

It's actually way bigger — and closer — than it looks in the photo, but for some reason this angle makes that impressive peak shrink a bit.

Here are a couple of other trees in this north view, with the farm buildings in the background:

    Maple sugar 2

    And more:

    Maple sugar 3

Maple sugaring is not something we have the time or skills to do, so we are delighted that the Parks family is able to put our sugar maples to good use like this. As to why it's still called maple sugaring, read this bit of history.

  • Fuzzy grooming 1

That's blind Fuzzy looking none too happy during his grooming on Friday. Our groomer, Lori Fillion, came out to the farm to do several of the dogs for their regularly scheduled "spa sessions."

    Here's Lori working on him:

    Fuzzy grooming 2

The body language in that photo above suggests Fuzzy doesn't think his beard needs any trimming, a sentiment I know all too well.

The grooming "salon" is actually the large laundry room next to the dog room. It is equipped with a big utility sink and the expansive, deep shelf Fuzzy is on.

And here's Lori with the "finished product":

It won't be long until he's fuzzy again!

  • Goose on pond March 28

This may be a little hard to see (click on the photo for a larger image), but there is the first goose we've seen on the pond this year. It landed as we were eating lunch today. Another sure sign that spring is at hand, despite the wintry scene. The goose keeps swimming around this afternoon, honking and honking, as if it's calling to the rest of the flock … or at least to its significant other. Yesterday evening we heard the first sounds of geese and ducks honking and quacking as they flew nearby, though we never did see them. And today, at least one lonely goose is using our pond as nature's truck stop on his or her journey to somewhere else.

  • NYT on Pet Euthanasia

The New York Times yesterday had a long and interesting piece on the difficult choices people have to make when it comes to end-of-life care for their pets. This is certainly a subject Alayne and I have wrestled with so many heartbreaking times over the years. The decisions never get easier, no matter how much painful "experience" we have to go by. No doubt nearly everyone reading this blog has been in that position before, too.

The Times story was thoughtful and insightful, and I figured you might want to read it if you haven't already. Full story here.

  • Bentley eye recheck

Last Thursday I took Bentley and Scamp back to see the ophthalmologist, Dr. Sarah Hoy, in Burlington for their two-week post-surgery exams. In the photo above, Sarah is examining Bentley while vet tech Rachel holds him still. A few minutes later, it was Scamp's turn:

    Scamp eye recheck

The verdict:  Both dogs, with three eyes between them, looked great, and they could now be cone-free. Nothing could have made them happier (well, except maybe for getting their vision back!).  Our fence is also happy, because it will no longer be battered by Scamp and his cone.

  • Plowing March 20

This is what I was doing this morning after another winter storm dumped several inches of snow on us yesterday and last night. I thought it was a little rude of Mother Nature to welcome in spring like this. Most of our snow had melted, the days were getting longer and warmer, and in our heads spring was on the way. Except, it wasn't.

It's not just us in New England who feel like this winter won't go away, of course. Across the pond, here's what Britain's Guardian newspaper had on their website yesterday:

  • Aurora in basket 2

This adorable little girl arrived a couple of weeks ago, and we kept her “under wraps” because we had so much going on. Meanwhile it quickly dawned on us that this senior was a whirl of activity and inquisitiveness who followed us around, wanting to know what we were doing, why we were doing it, and what we were going to do next — because she intended to be there.

Now, she doesn’t appear to be that assertive in the photo — the camera flash was going off and it makes her nervous — but Aurora is a bundle of energy who is timid one moment, then scurrying around the floor, doing play-bows and wanting to mix it up.

She came to us from Atlanta Beagle Rescue, who had pulled her from a West Virginia shelter where she had been described as a “sad, old blind dog” who was stressed out and not eating. Morgan from Atlanta Beagle Rescue told me in an email, “Turned out Ms. Aurora may be old, but not sad and not really blind.” They had to remove her right eye because of corneal ulcers, but she can still see from her compromised left eye.

Morgan added, ‘She is very active and plays with the tennis balls, then surgically removes the squeaker.” (That sounded very familiar to us.)

Despite Aurora’s cuteness, and despite having had her since last July, Atlanta Beagle Rescue had not been able to find anyone interested in adopting her. Hence the email asking if we could take her.

In the photos Morgan sent, we noticed how much Aurora looked like our own beloved Goldie, who we lost last year. As if her looks and surgical talents weren’t similar enough, Aurora immediately claimed Goldie’s favorite sleeping spot — the laundry basket bed — as her own.

You can see how troubled her remaining eye looks in this next photo:

    Aurora close up

Thus Aurora made the trip to Burlington two weeks ago to see our ophthalmologist, Dr. Sarah Hoy, as well as our internal medicine specialist, Dr. Tanya Donovan, for a geriatric screening.

Here she is getting the slit lamp exam:

    Aurora eye exam 1

And here she is, happily hanging out with vet tech Patty in between diagnostic procedures:

    Aurora with Patti

In the summary of her findings, Dr. Hoy wrote, “Aurora presented today with a sighted left eye that has severe corneal edema centrally. There is no corneal ulcer present today, however she will always be at risk for recurrent corneal ulcers due to the persistent edema in her cornea. The edema (fluid) can coalesce into bubbles of fluid that rise to the surface of the cornea and rupture causing new superficial ulcers. The mild redness to her eye may suggest an inflammatory component to the endothelial problem underlying the condition.”

That underlying condition is either corneal endothelial degeneration, corneal endothelial dystropy, or corneal endothelitis. At this point there is no way to know for sure which is the specific cause, but the outcome is the same: Aurora is at risk for continued development of corneal ulcers in the future. The treatment plan for now is a twice daily application of cyclosporine ointment for the rest of her life, and careful monitoring of her eye.

Then it was off to see Dr. Donovan for the usual, starting with the physical:

    Aurora with Tanya 1

Aurora may only have one eye, but that’s all you need to give “the eye” to the doctor:

    Aurora with Tanya 2

(Click on photo for larger version to see the look she’s giving Tanya.)

After some X-rays, the next stop was the ultrasound room. Here Tanya is scanning while vet tech Katie and fourth-year vet student Jennifer S. hold Aurora still:

    Aurora with Tanya 3

The rest of her organs looked fine, but on the echocardiogram it was clear the mitral valve in her heart is undergoing changes — some thickening — and thus she will need to start taking heart meds. Her bloodwork and urinalysis all came back normal.

Just as I was finishing writing up this post on Sunday afternoon, I headed downstairs to the kitchen to put some bread in the oven and saw Aurora asleep in her basket again:

    Aurora in basket again

Aurora says, “I don’t know who Goldie was but she was on to something here.”
