Today was a big day for Pappy.  Our beloved old Shepherd has spent the past few weeks recovering from pneumonia and then a brush with death from meningitis.  He has been gradually gaining strength and mobility.  This morning as I was grabbing my gloves and hat to head out the door to start barn chores, I heard him stirring in the living room.  Pappy had seen me … he knew the routine … and he wanted to go out on barn chores with me.  He got up on his own and went straight to the back door, looking over his shoulder at me as if to say, "well?"

Before he got sick, he always went with us on our barn chores.  He’d follow us everywhere, back and forth, trudging along.  He loved going out for the morning and evening rounds.  It was always his favorite time of the day.

So off we went this morning, his first barn chore jaunt since he came down with pneumonia.  It was already a hot morning and I knew he would overdo it if I let him — his back legs are kind of feeble still — so I picked him up and put him in the back seat of the truck.  That’s his favorite spot anyway.  He got to ride along as we moved two tons of hay this morning.  He seemed absolutely tickled.
