I was planning to write a really upbeat post Champagnebob3about our final day at the Seattle vet convention until Alayne called from the ranch this morning with awful news.  Champagne Bob, our little handicapped cat who had beaten the odds his entire life, died late last night.  He had a rare disease called Mucopolysaccharidosis Type VI.  Cats typically live no longer than 2 to 3 years maximum with this condition.  Champagne Bob was by our reckoning at least 5 years old and perhaps as old as 8 (we never had a definitive age when he arrived).  Our vets were always amazed at how well he did and how long he was living past the age when no cat was expected to survive.  You can read his original story here.

Alayne said Champagne Bob seemed a bit out of sorts yesterday evening, a little stiff in his legs (bear in mind he couldn’t walk at all, so this refers to his ability to move his legs while lying down), and he didn’t want his dinner at first.  He looked straight past the food on his plate, as if he were staring off into space.  That was very unusual, because this little guy absolutely LOVED to eat.  But he finally did eat later in the evening, and he was moving his legs around, so she figured he was okay.  Alayne then went out about 10 p.m. to let the dogs out one last time for the night and close up the barns.  When she got back to the house, she found he had just died … he was curled up in a little ball on his bed. He seemed peaceful, and there was no sign of any struggling or thrashing.  It was like he had just taken a last breath and slipped away.

He was without a doubt the most disabled animal at the ranch, and he lived a very constrained life in his special crib.  Yet there were still two things he loved about life: being petted and being fed.  We figured that as long as he had those, he had a good quality of life for a tiny guy who couldn’t walk. He was a survivor, and we’re glad we had the time we did with him.

Goodbye, little friend.

When I first saw you feeding Champagne Bob on TV a couple of years ago…I fell in love with him and the mission of the ranch. He has always been my favorite of all your animals. I am broken hearted to read of his death.
Thank you for caring for him and loving him.

Oh, I’m so sad. My two cats are watching me as I’m bawling my eyes out. Of all your animals I felt the ‘closest’ to Champagne Bob. Something about his story and his spirit just drew me to him. I was so hoping to be able to make a trip to the ranch this spring and finally meet him. God bless Champagne Bob on his journey. My thoughts are with you, Alayne and Steve. You did so much for this little cat.

Another sweet soul off to the Rainbow Bridge. This makes me so sad, and yet I know Champagne Bob has joined my Sweet Cind and so many other of our animal friends at the Bridge where they romp and play, unencumbered by any illness or disability. I know you miss him, but Champagne Bob is still with you and knows how much you love him.

Whew, now that’s bittersweet. Glad the little guy didn’t suffer…he was real special.
I have a missing cat, that always shows up at dinner for her meal. Well, she’s been missing for a week, and so I can only hope that she is ok or at the Rainbow Bridge with Champagne Bob.
She loves her freedom and was the type of cat that could not be kept indoors. As soon as that door opens she was out it! She’s a real love. I am glad to know that all our pets will be there for us when we cross over, and you two will have an incredible crowd!

You gave him the very best. He has now crossed the Rainbow Bridge and he is running and playing with all the rest.

    Steve and Alayne,
I was saddened to read the story about Champagne Bob’s passing last night. He was so very lucky to have the two of you “animal angels” watching over him during his life. He was a special little guy and I know you will miss him dearly. My thoughts are with you at this time.

How sad about dear little Champagne Bob. He was a sweetie. He enjoyed a happy life surrounded by love and good care. A kitty can’t ask for more. You gave him the best of care, as you do with all the animals. They are so lucky to have you guys.

I just read about Champagne Bob’s Passing. I can’t tell you how sad I feel, yet, I know he had the best life you could have given him. He is now running and playing with other disabled kitties that have passed on. Thanks for everything that you do for the animals.

Steve and Alayne, I am deeply saddened by this news. As you know when I first visited the Ranch Bob became my favorite, although I love them all there, large or small. He was able to meet so many souls because you allowed him to live his days in harmony at the Ranch. Thank You.
Bye Bye Bob, you are still my favorite.

I did not get to meet Bob in person. But this amazing little guy and his story have taught me so many things.
I guess the Number One thing is the value of life itself, of a loving hand, a nice meal, and a soft bed.
Now THAT’s Quality of Life. Maybe not for all of us, but for Bob it really was, there’s no denying it.
I also learned from Bob how very right and important it is to allow all souls the chance to live as comfortably and cherished as possible. Even when it is difficult and the care constant–it is always worth it. All souls have value and significance.
Bob also taught me the importance of not giving up. Just because we may have limitations, it doesn’t limit our reaching out to others. And Bob certainly reached out to others. Everyone loved him and he loved everyone right back. How perfectly pure and special love like that is.
Dear little Bob. I miss you so much already. This world is a better place because of the time you spent here, and a lesser place because of the hole you have left.

I was so sad to hear of Champagne Bob’s passing, yet I can see him romping and playing on the other side of the Bridge. I have “watched” him via your site, and felt such a special bond with this little guy. I am so grateful there are people like you who have so much love and dedication to making sure these animals live their lives to the fullest. Bless you both!

Champagne Bob has really touched my heart at this moment in time. I am taken aback by this huge story in such a tiny creature. I met Bob for the first time only moments ago as this was my first visit to your sight. I was ready to write and say how Bob’s little life was so large and full of inspiration to me, but in the course of looking for a place to email I found that he has passed on. In such a brief moment a being so saturated mine. Bob was crippled, and scarcely able to get around, but his little life certainly left me with a lot to think about. Even the smallest of God’s creatures are here for purpose. Thank you for all you did for him and those like him. God Bless you as you have blessed me through Bob and his ‘life’.

I too was searching for info on dwarfism and deformaties in cats and kittens, when I saw his story just 2 days ago, looking for info on my 6 month old, though she can walk she seems alot like him. He has given me hope in the knowing that they are special and that they can live a happy life with even just the simple petting and of course the food, they are happy, and knowing he lived as long as he has, I am in hope he has taught me that others like him can also live long happy lives. Thank you Champange for your encouragement, we are missing you now and hope you are happy at the rainbow bridge, please look after my sasha and hope she too can live and be as happy and high spirited as you. You are our insperation. Thank You!

Oh, I’m in tears. I’ve been an adoring fan of Champagne Bob ever since I discovered your site several years ago. It’s been a while since I’ve been able to catch up on the ranch and your doings. When I didn’t see Bob on the resident cat list, my heart sank.
Sweet little Bob, you are in the heart of so many people, even those of us very far away. I’ve sent the ranch website link to more than 100 people over the past couple of years, and Champagne Bob leapt straight into their hearts, as he did mine. We all love you so much, Bob.
I also miss the precious little dog in a wheelchair named Emmett. His page disappeared quite a while ago so I knew he was gone, but that face, and those amazing ears, will be with me in memory forever. Emmett, take good care of little Bob, okay?
Lots of love to you both, and to all the animals.
