Keisha3I had to take dear old Keisha, our 18-year old three-legged girl, in to the vet today to be euthanized.  Keisha had been going downhill for months, losing weight, becoming incontinent, and finding it increasingly difficult to maneuver on her one rear leg … which had hip dysplasia, making it even harder.  This photo is of Keisha soon after she arrived at the ranch from
Missoula Animal Control, when she was already a grand 16 years of age.

Yet she had her good days, when she’d be bright and alert and engaged, and she’d seem like her old self.  But the bad days began outnumbering the good ones.  Her kidneys were starting to fail, and she began having light tremors … not all the time, but frequently.  The tremors became more common in recent days.  We could tell her circulation was slowing down because her feet weren’t as warm as they should be.

Last Friday she seemed really down, but Friday night she had perked up again … but that was the last time she brightened.  We brought her over to the main house this weekend to be with us and keep an eye on her.  Yet it was clear the time had come.

So I bundled Keisha into the truck and drove into Missoula this afternoon to see Dr. Bostwick.  I had asked Dave if he would euthanize her for us.  I laid Keisha on the table and made all over her.  Our new employee, Kathryn, had described Keisha as a ‘proud old lady,’ and that captured her perfectly.  She was dignified and wanted to be treated that way, too.  She didn’t like to have her feet or her face touched, but she did like to kiss.  As I was petting her while she lay on the table, she lifted her head up and licked me twice on the face.  That broke my heart.  A couple of minutes later she was gone.

You can read this remarkable girl’s story here.

Her time at the ranch was relatively short, but they were her best years. My heart breaks for you and Alayne each time another goes to the Rainbow Bridge, yet the love and care you continue to give these animals is priceless. Bless you both!

Ah, Steve . . . your heart guides your pen. I, too, said goodby to my beloved Toby last week who had white tumor spots on 3 organs with kidney malfunction the worst. We held on to him as long as we could by putting canned a/d onto the roof of his mouth. The loss of our 4-legged friends never becomes easier; we never get used to it; it is just that it happens more frequently when we both receive/adopt older animals . . . the ones that others tossed aside. Thank you for being you & having Alayne. With tears I say: I am SO GLAD to be a volunteer & spread the word of RDR.

Keisha had the best while she was at the Rolling Dog Ranch. Thank you so much for providing her with love and the best care. Her kisses at the end were her way of thanking you. We know that you will miss her, but try to be comforted in knowing you gave her a perfect place to spend the rest of her days. With hugs of comfort,

Oh, goodbye sweet Keisha. You got to live quite a long time for a malamute and how lucky your last two years brought you to the ranch for love and care. You did so well for having three legs. Of course, I think of my malamute, Dakota, close to 13, who I had to say goodbye to in late Oct. Steve and Alayne, I’m so sorry and I know you’ll miss this girl.

You’ve had a very difficult last few days, losing both Willis and Keisha. They are so very fortunate to have found you and Alayne. Their lives at RDR were filled with love and they will continue to watch over you from the Rainbow Bridge. My heart goes out to you.

    Steve and Alayne,
My heart goes out to both of you. I am so sorry to hear about another loss at the ranch. Keisha lived to be 18 years because of the love, care, and pampering she received from you both. What a tribute to your love and dedication to these precious critters!

I keep looking for the words and there are no words, just tears. Tears of happiness for the wonderful golden years you gave to Keisha and tears of sadness for having to say goodbye. You and Alayne are very special people.

That is extremely sad to hear. It sounds like it was her time to go. What a great comment from Kathryn about her being a “proud old lady”. She was very dignified, thank you for cherishing her.
Take care Steve and Alayne; I know it’s been an extremely tough week.

    Steve and Alayne,
I just wanted to express my sympathy to you after reading about Keisha’s passing. She stole my heart the day that I met her back in November. I, too, had an old three-legged dog, Boone, who passed on three years ago. They are together now, happy and healthy and running on all fours again! Peace be with you.
