Alayne picked up blind and deaf Blanca and blind Kenai from our vet clinic in Helena on Friday.  (Little Puff was supposed to be coming home with them, too.)  Blanca had two procedures done — a spay and a laparoscopic gastropexy, which helps giant breed dogs like Great Danes keep from bloating.  Bloat can be fatal and immediate medical care is critical to survival … and since we’re more than an hour from the nearest vet clinic, this recently developed minimally invasive surgery could make all the difference.  Thus our internal medicine specialist in Helena, Dr. Britt Culver, did the procedure last week.  The only sign is an inch-long incision in Blanca’s side.

Dear old Kenai was another story.  This was one of those cases where a sudden onset of odd behavior led us to wonder whether something medical wasn’t underlying it.  Starting a few weeks ago, she began to have accidents in the house … this from a dog with impeccable potty habits.  She would hide in the bathroom, then stand up and pee — and pee.  Kenai would appear afraid, but there was nothing going on in the house or on the ranch to explain it.  Sometimes she seemed like she was hearing strange noises, her ears swiveling back and forth while she’d act nervous.

All of this was totally out of character for this big, blind Lab.  So we wanted Brenda and Britt to check her out medically to make sure there wasn’t anything going on medically to explain it.  Everything turned out just perfectly — especially for an old girl like Kenai.  Her bloodwork, X-rays, and neurological and physical exams all indicated a very healthy dog.

That leaves us with "cognitive" changes due to her age.  The good news is that since coming home, Kenai is back to her old self … so who knows?

Meanwhile, we think Blanca is on her way to developing a set of record-breaking ears.

Ears? You mean that pair of catcher’s mitts on top of her head? Seriously, though, she’s a nice looking dog.
Perhaps Kenai smells the smoke from your fires and getting nervous. The hiding part suggests something out of the ordinary.

Welcome back, Blanca & Kenai! Isn’t wonderful to leave all those scary smells and surgical tools at the veterinary hospital behind & be home again?:-)
It’s so sad sweet Puff couldn’t come home, too…

We had a friend whose GD almost died from bloat! It was a very smart decision to do laparoscopic gastropexy on Blanca.
Kenai glad you are feeling yourself–we all lose our minds from time to time. Thanks RDR for taking such supreme care of these lovely dogs!

Maybe Kenai was reacting to the smoky atmosphere that has been blowing in from the fires lately. Perhaps she was hearing something in the wind and smelling smoke so she was doing her part to put it out. She is very brave!!

I’m so glad that Kenai has the all clear with his health. Maybe he’d just smelled way too much smoke & was having a delayed stress reaction. (who knows?) He looks like such a sweetie! I’m thinking that Blanca’s ear size may be compensating for not being able to see & hear, maybe she’s going to be able to fly. She’ll grow into them, just give her time!
    Hugs to all,

Blanca really does have a marvelously long set of ears, never seen a pair quite like them! 😉
I’m glad her procedure went well and that Kanai is back to her regular self; and happily at home where they should be.

I don’t know how old Kenai is, but maybe she’s in the beginning of doggie Alzheimer’s (Canine Cognitive Dysfunction). Yes, even your dog can develop dementia, for the most part because they are living longer. I’m not a qualified medical professional, but here’s a quick link to the topic: http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art25417.asp

There is nothing quite like great dane puppy ears. They’re born with adult ears that they have to grow into. I love Blanca’s floppy ears….
