Over the past few years we’ve had lots of blog readers and supporters tell us, "You guys should write a book!"  Honestly, the thought makes me groan, because writing a book is a huge undertaking and takes tons of time … and that’s if you can get it published.  And we are so swamped, seven days a week, that we simply wouldn’t have the time to devote to a project like that.  Even though we’d love to see a book about the ranch and our special animals, it won’t happen if it’s left up to us.

Fortunately, that’s not the case.

If it does happen, it will be because of the lady you see above.  That’s Rebecca Wallick, a freelance writer who wrote the fabulous article on the sanctuary that appeared in Bark magazine last November.  Those are her two beautiful Malamute girls, Meadow on the left and Maia on the right.  (Incredibly sweet, adorable dogs!)  Rebecca is now putting together a book proposal on the sanctuary to send off to publishers.  She was here this week for a couple of days to do more research and to interview us some more.  Book proposals are quite detailed and lengthy documents that present the overall concept for the book.  If a publisher likes the proposal, they’ll commission the writer to do it.

So if anyone knows a publisher or literary agent who might be interested, just let us know and we can put them in touch with Rebecca!

Speaking of "research," Rebecca helped out with chores while she was here, including the daily "treasure hunt."  She had wobbly Smokey following her around the yard while she scooped the poop this morning.  He seemed to think he was supervising.  Hmm.

What a great idea! Personally, I would love to read a book on the ranch. Hope the proposal gets accepted. While we are gearing up for another blazing hot summer down here in South Africa, I send you lots of warm greetings. Take care.

I hope Rebecca is successful in getting a book published about the fantastic RDR! It’s great that she’s there helping out & getting to know the critters. (Or, they are getting to know her!) That’s a beautiful photo of Rebecca with her dogs! Are they there with her? I really enjoyed the article she wrote, & I trust that there will be a publisher for her book!
    Hugs to all,

We’ll sure look forward to Rebecca’s certain success. We 1st heard of your awesome RDR in The Bark, and owe her many many thanks for the inspiration.
PS: Love those gorgeous “Huskies”! I know they’re Malamutes, but to us University of Washington alums, you can understand why we say “WOOF” to Rebecca and “GO DAWGS”! http://gohuskies.cstv.com/genrel/081105aab.html

I would love to see a book about your venture. It would make such a wonderful gift, also. Put me down for five! Ha Ha! Really, it is a goal I hope this woman can help you achieve. Your life work would make for awesome reading.
Sometime it makes me sad to read your blog. But then I think of all the marvelous things you have done. Sometimes it is the final journey for these great animal souls that you have made better. How is Copper kid these days? Lena must really have a personality. I love the horse in my soup picture. I do not know if I have yet recovered from Spirit’s loss. I did see Alayne and the Florida couple who adopted her on TV. Did she love those crazy wonderful outfits, or what? You have had some fun additions to your dog family lately.
I look at your blog often. Thank you for the time you put into it. Your efforts are much appreciated. As ever, Claire

Samartha Glen wrote a book on Best Friends in Utah and it was published by Kingston or Harper Collins who published Marley and Me. Rebecca’s girls are MAGNIFICENT! Our beloved Siberian Husky was mistaken for a Malamute most of his life.

Lulu.com might be a nice option, and much less stressful and cost intensive, than vying for some other publisher’s attention.
You can publish it through them at your own specification and use the site to help get your book on the shelves of various retailers, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble etc.

Traer Scott published “Shelter Dogs” and “Street Dogs” through Merrell Publishing (merrellpublishing.com) and Elise Lufkin published “Found Dogs” and “Second Chances” through The Lyons Press (www.lyonspress.com). Given the subject matter, those might be viable publishers.
And kudos to you all for everything you do… I can’t put into words the joy your site and your blog bring me – there aren’t enough people doing this kind of work!
