Popeye, the cat who came from Lebanon a few months ago, has ruptured the cornea in his left eye.  Not just a nice little treatable corneal ulcer, but a hole that goes right through the cornea and into the anterior chamber.  The internal fluid in the eye, called the aqueous humor, was leaking out and forming a bubble on the surface of his eye.  His eye was filled with goop, and once I wiped it away, I could see immediately what had happened.

So Alayne drove him to our vet clinic in Helena this morning, and took the photo above of Dr. Brenda Culver examining Popeye’s eyes with her slit lamp, an ophthalmic microscope.  Vet tech Rick is holding Popeye for her.  Brenda will have to remove his left eye as a result of the rupture.  She’s concerned that she also sees further changes in his right eye, through which he still has a bit of vision left.

Here’s what his left eye looked like:

Popeyes_eye_close_up

If you click on the photo for a larger image, you can clearly see the brown-ish bubble … the hole is to the left of the bubble, in the dark spot.

When I saw this, I was momentarily confused … because I thought I had seen it before.  But where?  I went back and looked at the earlier photos of Popeye that the Lebanese rescue group had sent us, and there it was … as a scrawny, tiny kitten, you can see a similar rupture in the same eye … in the same spot!

Popeye_kitten_1

That rupture was what cost him vision in the left eye as a kitten.  It’s odd that the same thing would happen several months later … and while we think the initial rupture when he was a baby was caused by a runaway virus of some sort, we don’t know for sure what caused the corneal blow-out this time.  He hasn’t been sick, his eyes looked fine, and then all of a sudden, the cornea ruptures.

It may already have been very weakened by the earlier episode; a cat’s cornea is only about half-a-millimeter thick to begin with.  Brenda wonders if Popeye didn’t run into something … he zooms around the cat house like a whirling dervish, and doesn’t always pay close attention to where he’s going!

So Brenda will do surgery tomorrow and remove that eye … and Popeye will be a much happier boy afterwards.

We finally got the pathologist’s report on Wobbles’ necropsy, and he died from a sudden onset of acute pneumonia.  He was prone to pneumonia — typically, aspiratory pneumonia from getting bits of food in his lungs, because of how he wobbled while he ate — and we battled many scary episodes … he would be fine in the evening and at death’s door the next morning.  In just a matter of hours, pneumonia would consume him.  But equally, he responded to treatment in just a few hours, too.  Yet each subsequent case would be worse than the previous one; it would strike faster and the symptoms would be more severe.  Somehow, the timing of this episode was such that we didn’t catch it before it was too late.  And that haunts me.

That picture of Popeye as a kitten is so awful, poor guy. His name fits him and I hope the right eye doesn’t cause him problems, so he won’t be completely blind. PLEASE give us an update when appropriate. Can’t wait to meet all these new RDR residents on our visit this summer!!!
Steve, you and Alayne do all you possibly can for the RDR residents and sometimes things are out of our control. I know that feeling of being haunted and it never seems to go away completely. Wobbles was more than well loved. I’m sorry.

So sorry to hear about Popeye’s eye problem. He will feel MUCH better after his surgery. Now, in reference to Wobble’s passing,—–Steve, please forgive your self, you– (dear person and Alayne) did all you could for him. From all you have said about him, he was a happy little fellow while he was at the ranch, SO, that is all you can ask, right? Bless each of you for your concern and dedication to EACH and everyone of your “babies” ,large or small.
Take care and keep on keeping on! Looks like this is going to another very interesting and busy year at RDR. P.S. Hope Ellie May’s currant medical problem is treatable and she is feeling better very soon.

You know guys with as many animals as you have to care for and as many things you have to watch out for it’s a wonder you catch a lot of the things that happen to your animals. Wobbles just couldn’t come up and tell you he was not feeling well. When my Holly girl gets sick, which has been quite often in the past month, she just looks at me and asks with her eyes can you help me. We haven’t quite figured out yet what is going on….if only she could tell us exactly where it hurts. I just wish I could speak dog. My point is don’t let this haunt you. Maybe God needed a cat by his side and Wobbles was the lucky one to be chosen.

I’m glad Popeye will be feeling better soon!! Oh Steve, I know it’s hard not to think that way with Wobbles, we all want to be there for our animals when it is there time to go, but sometimes it just doesn’t work out that way. He had a great life!!!! One he would not have had with out you two!! Much love and see you next weekend.

I hope Popeye’s eye surgery is a complete success; I’m sure he’ll feel so good after the eye is removed.
I can understand how you feel about the nature of Wobbles passing. Hopefully searching within and looking at the ranch through different eyes, you’ll see that you do a marvelous job attending to the animals (sudden) health needs. I am so sorry you feel “haunted”. I hope you can find comfort and release during this process. You have the support of many people, myself included, who know you do the best you can to care for and love the animals 100%, all while educating people on the foundation of love, care and value of disabled animals. It’s an incredible gift you’ve given.

My thoughts are with Popeye, I hope his surgery goes well. I found your description and pictures of what happened so interesting. It sounds painful, though. I’m sorry about you feeling haunted for not getting to Wobbles in time. There was nothing you could do, it sounds like it happened so quickly. I do know what you are feeling though…we lost a cat a couple years ago to a dog attack. I was home at the time and heard some weird noises, but passed them off as nothing. When I finally investigated, I saw the 2 dogs (Golden Retrievers of all things) mauling my poor 18 year old cat, Bumps. I scared the dogs away, but I got to Bumps too late and he died in my arms. I will forever be haunted by that – I still feel like I should have saved him. I go through the “what if I had done this or that” scenerio all the time. Anyway…sometimes life just happens as it happens and it’s their time. Maybe my sweet Bumps and little Wobbles are friends up in kitty heaven. Hugs and kisses to all the furries there at Rolling Dog Ranch.

    Hi,
Steve i didn’t know how else to e-mail you. I inquired about Oliver yesterday but it’s really twist I’m interested in. I’m wondering down the line if he may be up for adoption?? My work e-mail is gcapone@dedham-ma.gov He looks like my dog Buddy, which I still have, but he looks so sad. Even though I live in I’d be willing to pay for his flight and etc. I also have a yorkie (24 pounds) a big boy.
    Thanks

Neither my words nor those of anyone else will stop you from feeling haunted by Wobbles’ passing, Steve, but I doubt that there is anyone who reads your blog who doesn’t think that every animal on the Ranch is getting the best attention possible from you and Alayne. Short of watching each of them constantly all day and all night, there is no way to avoid losing some of them — and being haunted by it. He left you early, but Wobbles was a lucky guy on every one of the days you had him.

Sorry to hear about Popeye. I put all animals in my prayers at night, so he’s covered. He’ll be fine. He looks like a fighter.
As to Wobbles having pneumonia, you can’t be everywhere at one time. Little Wobbles would not want you to feel bad because somebody missed a clue. You do awesome work, but sometimes things happen and God wants a new kitty.

Oh Steve, please don’t let the passing of Wobbles haunt you! You and Alayne did so much for him, and I know that he wouldn’t want you to feel that way!!! Sometimes things like this just happen and there is nothing that we can do about them. Please have no regrets – he had a wonderful life with you and Alayne and all the other animals! Patty

I spent 20 years (yes 20 years) with my cat having the same eye problem as Popeye. The area where the cornea ruptured was thinner than the rest of the eye, thus weaker. On occassion the pressure in the eye would cause it to bulb and then rupture again. The vet thought she might have been born with a herpes virus that caused the initial rupture. She was a wonderful teaching tool for the students at WSU. She eventually lost her sight in that eye; but we didn’t have to remove it. I’m sure Popeye will feel so much better after the eye is removed. My prayers are with him.

Dearest Steve and Alayne, You are such incredibly unselfish, compassionate, dedicated people. Unfortunately the downside to these admirable qualities is that you always feel you should have done more. Please remember the many times you saved Wobs from pneumonia and extended his happy life with you at the ranch (not to mention all the other critters you’ve saved from medical crises!). If not for you, the hundreds of animals you’ve cared for these past years would have died without ever knowing the love, joy, and security of RDR.
    Sending many e-hugs to you,
    Debbie

I hope Popeye will be feeling better soon! He looks like quite the little fighter. We have high hopes for him.
I am so sorry about Wobbles. You both did so much for him. Please take comfort in knowing that he had a very happy and comfortable life at the Ranch – a life he would never have had without you and Alayne. So many animals with this disease are just put down and never given a chance to live at all. No words I can tell you will take away your feelings of regret, but please always remember what special people you are and how so many animals are alive and have a loving home because of you both.

Hi Steve, I do know how this feels with just losing Jackie. When I found her gone in the morning I just kept asking…if only. I think it’s safe to say that Wobbles was loved and there is no ‘if’ in that.

    Re: Wobs
Someone saying don’t let it haunt you and actually being able to not feel it are different I know but really and truely we all know Wobbles got the best of care and love. It’s NOT your fault, you did all you could and as you said each episode got faster and faster. I’m sure it weakened him each time until it happened so swiftly there was no stopping it. And truthfully, even had you miraculously been able to catch it in time, there would have been more and one of those times would have taken him. Just know we all know you ALWAYS do your best and more. He just chose to go across the bridge this time. Hugs to you both.
