Granny on island

Our little sun-worshipper, blind-and-deaf Granny (the elderly Jack Russell terrier formerly known as Duchess), managed to find the one spot in the yard the other day that didn't have any snow.  The "island" she found is actually the concrete access cover for our septic system.  Not only was it snow-free, but it was also the warmest spot because of the heat absorbed by the concrete lid.  Alayne saw her standing on it, soaking in the sun, and got these photos.  In that first shot above she almost looks like a lawn ornament, doesn't she?

This view will show you just how small her island is in the larger scheme of things:

Finally, here's a close-up of the sun lady:

Granny on island 3

I have very sad news to report on our other elderly blind-and-deaf girl, my little minion Ellie May.  We had to say goodbye to her a week ago.  For the past year Ellie May had battled intestinal problems, and I had posted on the blog in January 2008 about the colonoscopy and other diagnostic tests we had done on her.  After ruling out cancer, growths in her intestine, and other problems, our internal medicine specialist in Missoula could not find an underlying cause.  For a while she improved and we got our hopes up, but then she began deteriorating again.  She struggled with weight loss and chronic bowel issues, and no dietary changes or medications made a difference.  Towards the end we think she was also developing doggie Alzheimer's, because she started wandering off and losing her bearings.  For a dog with an incredible nose who could smell me at 100 yards, to see her unaware of her surroundings was really sad.  She continued to waste away physically, and we finally had Dr. Bostwick put her to sleep.  Still puzzled over her medical problems, Dave did a necropsy (an autopsy) but even now could not find any sign of what caused her intestinal issues.  Bless her heart, we didn't have her long but she sure was a joy to have in our lives.

Steve, I’m so sorry about your minion, Miss Ellie May. I get so sad everytime I read one of your posts saying that another member of your furry family has passed away, but I know that their years at RDR were the best years of their lives. Thanks for all you do!

My condolences on the loss of Ellie May – I can still recall the post of her first day on the ranch and how you took such care so that she felt the warmth of your presence all the time.
By taking on so many animals who have been abandoned because of health (and often age) issues, losing them must be a bit of an occupational hazard. I’m sure it is always incredibly difficult and painful.
Please take solace in the great joy you have brought these gentle souls – even if for only a short time.

The news of Ellie May’s passing was sad but when I read her “meet the dogs” posting again I realized what a wonderful time she had as your minion. Dying in the care of people who love us and place our needs before their own is the best way to leave, whether the “we” is human or animal.
Seeing Granny enjoying her sun spot made me smile as you have made yet another ‘throw away’ dog an honoured member of the RDR family. I’m fascinated that she can find a warm spot so accurately–but I suppose the concrete cover may have its own special aroma!
My sympathies to you and to Alayne on the loss of Ellie May.

I’m sorry you guys. Ellie May had a good end to her time on this earth. Steve are you taking apps for another minion?
I’d vote for Noodle or Soba. They are beautiful girls and we should see more of them. The good, bad and the ugly. I’m sure there is more good than ugly with these ladies. If I didn’t have a deck with stairs I’d take them and be proud.

Your blogs are real tough sometimes–joy and happiness along with sadness and death.
I’m so sorry to hear about Ellie May. She got such a wonderful break with you after her near-miss with that other option. I know she had a ball at RDR being the best little minion around. RIP, sweet minion.
And just seeing Granny enjoying the sunshine is all it takes to make me smile for her and smile and smile. NOthing else, just smiling. Go Granny!

I wonder how long it took Granny to find the hot spot amidst the snow….so amazing!
I’m so sorry to hear of Ellie May’s passing. It’s difficult to see our beloved animals so ill they are phsically wasting away. I know Ellie May had the best of care and your choice to free her was the best decision; hard as it was. I know there will be a void under your desk, Steve, I hope when you feel blue about it, you remember Ellie May’s devotion and just that thought of that brings a little relief.
    Sending love and care….

    Steve and Alayne,
i am so sorry to hear about the loss of Ellie May. I know how lonely that must be for you Steve, to look down for her and not see her there. Upon reading about your loss, I went online to find a poem about dogs I remembered. But while looking I found a quote for you and Alayne that really sums up the hardest part of the wonderful life you have chosen.
“We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own live within a fragile circle, easily and often breached.Unable to accept its awful gaps, we still would live no other way. We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully understanding the necessary plan.”—Irving Townsend from “The Once Again Prince”
    My thoughts are with you.

I’m so sorry to hear about Ellie May. We are also going through intestinal problems with one of our minpins-14 year old Brandy. She’s been under Dave’s care for 2 years with inflammatory bowel disease. Its a frustrating disease which doesn’t always seem to have any rhyme or reason to its occurance. Brandy is still a happy girl, although she is very thin and now blind from cataracts. As long as she is still enjoying life, we will continue to enjoy our time with her, just as you did with Ellie. Prayers go out to you both.

My condolences on the loss of Ellie May. What a sweetie she was. You made her last year a very happy one, and she left knowing she was loved. My dog died under similar circumstances 10 years ago. Intestinal trouble for 14 months and we never really identified the cause. We tried everything… tested for everything. She was quite the trooper.
My heart goes out to both of you.

Oh little Granny, you are a beautiful lawn ornament. Amazing how you can seek out the warmest spot in all that snow! You make me smile. Enjoy your sunshine.
Steve & Alayne, I will say this as I have said before. How you deal with these losses just amazes me but also proves to me how much you have put these sweet animals ahead of your own needs. I am so sorry Ellie May had to leave us & how lucky she was to have been your minion even if it was a short time. You gave her peace, love & joy in the last days of her life. Thank you for that & know that she is now running in green fields & sunshine. I laugh & I cry when I read your blogs.

Sorry about Ellie May. We lost our AWOL two weeks ago. We only had him two years, but we hope it made up for what life had thrown at him. We don’t know what made his kidneys fail and that is the hardest part, like Ellie May, not knowing why. AWOL had a good checkup two weeks before he left us. Just wish they both could have had more time living the good life.

We have a 14 year old Jack Russell like Granny. She loves to lie in the sun. She is beginning to loose her hearing and sight so I wonder how much time we have left with her but we try to make the most of every day.
