Bugsy on bed

Just a quick update on Bugsy, who we affectionately refer to these days as "Little Man" (though I don't know why). He has completed his transition from the terrifying dog who first arrived here to a wonderful, loving and sweet boy. I took the photo this afternoon in the dog room. Bugsy always looks bigger in photos that he really is — his face would fit in the palm of my hand, for example.

Bugsy learned to use his cuddle-bugness (bugability?) to his advantage: In the morning when we try to take him out of his crate, he always rolls over to expose his chest and tummy to get a rubdown before "consenting" to leave the crate. Clever, eh?

He's in the running to be the "cover model" of our winter/holiday print newsletter. He's competing with — maybe no surprise here — Wilbur. Imagine a TV contest show with two contestants, and it's called "What's Your Story?" Of course, Wilbur easily dominates in the photo category because we have so many great shots of him already, though Bugsy's actual story is pretty darn compelling. Our newsletter editor (that would be me) already has the competing headlines written in his head, but is waffling on the final editorial decision. We just might read both stories to the rest of the dogs and let them vote on who gets to be on the cover.

Dear Newsletter Editor Steve, I vote for a cover featuring both Wilbur and Bugsy. Maybe they could be coaxed into sitting together for a photo, or maybe the photo could be a half and half arrangement.
Have a beautiful autumn week, folks!

I vote for Bugsy. I am so glad to hear he has overcome his fears. You are right tho, in photos he looks to be the size of Madison.

What a wonderful update. Bugsby intuitively knew he was in a place full of love so couldn’t help give you his.

I love little Wilbur but I think Bugsy should get his minute of fame and be on the cover. Wilbur already steals the spotlight so much. And remember blog readers – vote in the shelter challenge which begins today. If you don’t see the spot where to click and vote, just scroll to the right of the page and click on the Shelter Challenge tab. Thanks.

On a coverlet of multiple pastels, it’s difficult to think of Bugsy as a “killer”. He looks absolutely just too, too cute!!! It’s so good that the Bugsys of the world have you guys to prove that all people aren’t stinkers.

How about two cover shots? Own both collector’s editions! The miracles you folks achieve with your talents and care never cease to amaze me. Kudos all around!

I’m so glad Bugsy has gotten over his fears and settled in. I agree with the co-hosts idea. Maybe they could interview one another, or debate a topic, or provide tips on cuteness, snuggling, and scamming for cookies. The possibilities are endless… 🙂

I, too, agree with the co-hosting of Wilbur and Bugsy for the cover and for their stories.
I really am so glad to hear that Bugsy is now a happy, healthy and content dog. He’s finally found out what true love and caring are and what the good life is all about!

What I found compelling about Bugsy’s story – like Avery’s though with a happier outcome – is the way it shows us how dogs have minds, they think, have ideas of what’s going on based on what they already know, and they have plans (Bugsy’s was that everyone should stay away from him, since he didn’t know where he was or with whom). And, as importantly, they don’t cling to what they’ve learned – don’t need ENDLESS proofs that things have changed – but are open to experiment, new experiences, to surprise & to change. Bugsy is how we should be.

What is it about a sleeping dog all curled up that just makes you smile? Bugsy looks so peaceful and contented. That says so much about how much time and effort you put forth for all your animals.

I think after seeing the original picture of Bugsy’s trauma, I would love to see him come full circle and be the happy cover dog. But I too would be unable to decide! 🙂 – so I think I’m with the “both” folks. Make it a double-header? Whatever you decide will be great.
