Rosie sleeping on hay

There isn't much left to eat in the way of fresh grass now in the horse paddocks, so we've been taking the horses some hay during their daytime turn-outs. One day last week, though, they apparently had plenty to eat, because I found blind Rosie keeled over, sound asleep, on her pile of hay. Blind Nikki behind her is resting on her pile and about to go over for a nap as well. I've heard of "sleeping off" a big meal, but … actually sleeping on it?

It’s so wonderful that, as blind horses, they feel comfortable enough to crash in the field. As prey animals, horses choose their time and place carefully before going down for some REM sleep.
While I’ve seen plenty of horses dozing in fields while sternum recumbent, this is wonderful to see. Sweet dreams, girls.

Have you been able to continue with Nikki’s riding lessons at all since the move to New Hampshire?

Clearly they’re wondering why you spread their bedding on the dining room table…

What a funny picture! The horses remind me of when toddlers fall asleep during their meals.

What a great picture! Knowing nothing about horses myself, I always thought a horse that was laying down had something wrong with it. I always thought they slept standing up and had no idea that they actually lay down to take a snooze. I’ve learned so many new things reading your blog!

Your photo scared me at first…I thought Rosie was down and needed help. Phew. I hope someday they realize just how good they have it at RDF. Oh, and kudos to the Bedding and Accommodations manager..good job on the ‘bedding’, but where is the pillow? 😉

Lovely post – I was a bit concerned too, at first – thought Rosie was not well, but glad to hear all is well. Nice thoughtful sleep aids you provide!! Bless you for all you do for these dear fellow beings.
